COVINGTON

Covington is coming to the forefront in 2025.

The largest city in Northern Kentucky, Covington plays a vital role in both the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan and its own state of Kentucky. Founded in 1815, Covington is distinguished by its unique mix of historic preservation and modern revitalization.

Covington holds a significant place in the tapestry of American history, particularly as a port city on the Ohio River. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers facilitated its growth as a hub for trade and industry throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the 2020 census, Covington’s population was 40,961, and the city spans approximately nearly 14 square miles.

The city is home to 17 National Register Historic Districts, showcasing an impressive array of architectural styles. Initiatives like the Covington Academy of Heritage Trades trains skilled craftspeople in restoring older homes and buildings. Another such historical gem is the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge. Completed in 1866, the bridge connects Covington to Cincinnati. It also served as the prototype for the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, also designed by Roebling.

MainStrasse Village is a charming and historically rich cultural district, with an identity deeply rooted in its German heritage. This part of town was meticulously revitalized in the late 1970s with a $2.5 million federal grant to emulate a 19th-century German village. This dedication to preservation earned it a National Historic District designation in 1983. The village’s distinctive character is showcased through its restored brick buildings, many dating from the mid-1800s, cobblestone streets, and iconic landmarks like the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower and the Goose Girl Fountain, creating a picturesque and highly walkable environment that attracts both locals and tourists.

Strasse Dog is in the heart of the MainStrasse Village. This friendly local shop provides a meticulously curated selection of high-quality products for dogs – premium foods and treats, tons of toys, and cute canine apparel. When you first walk into the store, you’ll find yourself greeted by friendly vibes and potentially, a friendly shop pup. Either way, you’re in for a treat. Strasse Dog stocks a variety of better options for dogs – no more dry kibble or fillers and questionable ingredients.

Need to take care of other needs your dog might have? Strasse Dog also provides professional grooming services by appointment. Get your pup pampered with a cut and a clip. Even if you don’t have a dog, find an excuse to come by.

Strasse Dog is just one stop in the vibrant array of unique Covington businesses. Explore independent establishments like Purple Paisley Local Artisan Shop, offering local art, or Grainwell, known for its wood art and home decor. SoHza Sister Boutique offers ethically sourced goods, and Handzy Shop + Studio provides curated clothing, accessories, and stationery. Book lovers and collectors can browse Hail Records & Oddities for vintage vinyl and curiosities. Shops like these contribute to MainStrasse’s strong reputation as a destination for one-of-a-kind treasures and experiences.

The culinary scene in Covington is also diverse and thriving, offering a range of dining experiences. Libby’s Southern Comfort offers just that – Southern comfort – and is a popular choice for its fried chicken and goetta hushpuppies. Otto’s is a farm-to-table bistro popular for brunch, known for its welcoming atmosphere. Coppin’s at Hotel Covington provides a modern American dining experience inside a beautifully restored historic building, if you want a fancy date night. Rich’s Proper Food and Drink is known for its Southern-inspired dishes and creative cocktails, including the “One Last Smoke,” a bourbon drink with a cherrywood smoke show. Ripple Wine Bar offers an extensive selection of wines by the bottle or glass, paired with small plates like pierogis and charcuterie boards,

If you’re after international flavors, the original Agave & Rye location on Madison offers a variety of tacos and a wide selection of tequilas. Nearby, Frida’s 602 serves Latin street cuisine and boasts a tequila and mezcal bar. Bouquet walks the walk with its farm-to-table approach. Kungfood Chu’s Amerasia is a cult classic, offering authentic Asian cuisine, as is Riverside Korean Restaurant – both regularly make the list of Greater Cincinnati’s top favorite restaurants.

Want to try the Covington nightlife? You’ve got plenty of options. In MainStrasse, Wunderbar is a classic choice for German beer and sausages. Stop by for karaoke on Thursdays. Braxton Brewing Company, a pioneer in the local craft beer scene, has its original taproom in Covington and features a popular rooftop bar with city views. Braxton also hosts Covington Maifest, which welcomes spring, each May in nearby Goebel Park. Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar offers an extensive selection for bourbon enthusiasts. Other popular spots include Molly Malone’s Irish Pub and various cocktail lounges.

If you’re looking to get outside, look no further than Devou Park. Expansive green spaces, walking and biking trails, a golf course, and panoramic views of the Cincinnati skyline, Devou is stacked. The park’s bandshell also hosts performances by the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. The Carnegie Visual & Performing Arts Center provides a venue for theater, music, and art exhibitions. The city also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, including the Mainstrasse Oktoberfest, celebrating its German heritage.
