GOSHEN

After a day spent traversing Goshen, it’s clear that this is a community-oriented neighborhood with plenty of options for everyone who stops by.

Established as a township in 1819, Goshen was founded in 1799, primarily by settlers who had fought in the Revolutionary War. The neighborhood has moved into the 21st Century, but there is no mistaking the rich history upon which it was founded. State Route 28 serves as the main thoroughfare from this pastoral, farm-and-field-full neighborhood that is home to just over 16,000 residents.

Learn more about the history of Goshen Township through the Goshen Township Historical Society. The Society runs two locations, both steeped in Goshen history. First is the Goshen Township Historical Society Museum, colloquially referred to as the Anchorage, featuring permanent and rotating exhibits that highlight Goshen’s long history and notable citizens.

Then there’s the Log Cabin Heritage Center, which features an 18th century log cabin, painstakingly restored by the society, and several outbuildings, all of which help to illustrate life in Goshen from the days of the pioneers through the Great Depression era. The Goshen Township Historical Society School of Blacksmithing is also located on the premises, in a 19th century replica blacksmith shop. Visitors of all experience levels can take a class at the school shop, whose mission is to preserve and promote blacksmithing for future generations.

There are a few star businesses that shine out and the first on the list is Goshen Grind. This independent, family-owned coffee shop offers a caffeinated lifeline for anyone who wants to stop in to pick up their coffee or swing through the convenient drive-thru. Though it is highly recommended to take a gander inside because this shop is one the most charming you’ll find in any neighborhood, anywhere.

The choices are nearly endless. Choose from a robust menu of traditional coffee beverages, like mochas and lattes, or order a matcha or golden milk latte, or just get a regular cup of jo, roasted by La Terza. If you’re in the mood for a cold drink to quench your thirst, try one of the fancy soda flavors, or a frosty frapp. Or one of the seasonal offerings might hit the spot – we’re talking iced strawberry matcha, iced fruit loop, spritzer, etc.

While you’re imbibing, you might as well take a peek at the well-stocked pastry case. The delectable donuts are courtesy of Pop’s Donut Shop, located in nearby Milford, or select from an assortment of scones and buckeye brownies. Local business is the name of the game at Goshen Grind, which is artfully packed full of items from myriad local entrepreneurs. Pick up a pair of handmade earrings from Essa by Sarah Helen or skincare from the Nourished by Kayla line. There are handmade clay mugs, bags of OMG (Oat My Granola) and local honey for sale, or a new apron, or a new quilt. Local art lines the walls, and the windows are packed full of beautiful stained glass pieces.

Goshen Grind was damaged and out of commission for six weeks when a tornado struck Goshen in July 2022. The community pulled together to support its businesses – over 100 buildings were damaged or destroyed in the storm. There is a definite air of giving back at Goshen Grind and it is as inspiring as it is supportive. In fact, Goshen Grind takes that giving back one step further and donates a portion of the tips they receive every month to a local cause. If that isn’t being a good neighbor in action, who knows what is.

Another family-owned outfit in Goshen Township is Holtman’s Donuts. The wildly popular and exuberantly flavored donuts are as popular in Goshen as they are in each of the other four locations across the Greater Cincinnati region, and the store is open until 10pm for late-night donut seekers.

There are plenty of industrial-related businesses in Goshen Township, including among them Regal Equipment Rental, Hydramachine (a hydraulic repair service), and Signature Stone Design, as well as services oriented to residents, like Katrina Knuckles: Allstate Insurance, Best K-9 Training, Fuse Martial Arts and Fitness, Kustom Ken’s Tattoos, or the Quilt Shop.

Grab a bite at one of the local restaurants: Lori’s American Grille serves up craveable burgers and hearty apps; Angilo’s Pizza also offers hoagies in addition to ‘za; The Bronze Bell Bar and Grill for a drink and a bite; and A Chinese Takeout takes care of any Chinese cravings. Visit the Eagles Nest Public Golf Course for a day on the links, or pop by Cedar Lake and its bait shop for a day on the water. Spend some time at the Alpaca Paradise Farm and learn about these fluffy animals or purchase any number of alpaca-related items such as yarn, blankets, and more.

After a day spent traversing Goshen, it’s clear that this is a community-oriented neighborhood with plenty of options for everyone who stops by.

IN 2023, THESE  BUSINESS DISTRICTS ARE COMING TO THE FOREFRONT

MT. WASHINGTON

Settled in 1797 and bearing the motto “the crossroads of opportunity,” the city of Reading has a friendly, suburban atmosphere with big-city proximity. The city spans nearly three miles and boasts several parks, a farmer’s market, and a healthy mix of business and industry. Reading has something for everyone, both in its own 10,000+ population and the broader community.

OAKLEY

What’s old is new again in more ways than one when it comes to Oakley. This booming Cincinnati neighborhood had a heyday in the mid-19th Century, too, as a popular wagon trail stop on the Madison Turnpike – what is now Madison Road. Representing a healthy mix of older and newer businesses, the 21st Century iteration of Oakley has what must be the same take-off-your-hat-and-stay-awhile vibe as before.

DAYTON, KY

Incorporated in 1867, the charming, historic neighborhood of Dayton, Kentucky is nestled just south of the Ohio River. Accounts are divided on how the city of just under 6,000 came to have the same name as its Ohio counterpart, but one thing is certain: Dayton, Kentucky is a singular place. Traverse the two-mile town and you’ll see for yourself.

CLIFTON

Location, amenities, history – Clifton has it all. Established in 1850 and annexed to the city of Cincinnati in 1893, this neighborhood is located just three miles north of downtown and less than a mile from the University of Cincinnati. Home to gorgeous architecture, one of the city’s only independent movie theaters, and plenty of thriving small businesses, an adventure in Clifton is an excellent way to spend a day.
