MONTGOMERY
Montgomery is coming to the forefront in 2025.
Montgomery, Ohio is a charming and vibrant city nestled in Hamilton County, just east of Cincinnati. With a population of over 10,000 residents, Montgomery blends the cozy feel of a small-town community with the conveniences of a thriving suburban enclave.
Established in 1795 and officially laid out in 1802 by Nathaniel Terwilliger, the city grew up as a bustling coach stop and stagecoach inn along the Cincinnati–Zanesville Road, which became known as the Montgomery Pike. That history is woven into the DNA of today’s Montgomery: laid-back, welcoming, and rooted in community spirit.
Montgomery’s journey from early-America settlement to bedroom community mirrors the story of many American small towns. What began with early settlers from Montgomery, New York evolved into an agricultural hub, complete with mills and taverns. The village officially incorporated in 1910 and became a city in 1971. Along the way, historic structures like the Yost Tavern (built in 1805 when the village was founded), the Wilder–Swaim House (1815), and the Blair House (1875) have been preserved and proudly maintain Montgomery’s 19th-Century character. Today, these architectural gems live alongside walkable, brick-lined streets, local shops, and parks like Swaim Park.
In the summer months, Walker Bros. Ice Cream, a seasonal softserve wonder tucked in the Heritage District, is an absolute can’t-miss. M Walker Bros. started in 2006 when a local family moved to the community, purchased a landmark building, and turned its yard and carriage house into a soft-serve ice-cream shop. The shop is named for the four Walker boys, the shop’s original tastetesters. More than just a place to grab a cone, it’s a cheerful gathering spot with yellow siding and patio seating under bright teal umbrellas. The patio also features a large pergola, music, and water misters for the ultimate family-friendly experience.Stop in for one of their many colorful sundaes, like the blue Cookie Monster sundae, pink Flying Pig sundae, or the very 2025 Cicada sundae. Try the ice cream flavor of the week – pineapple, mango, and lime are particular standouts – or an ice cream sandwich.
Walker Bros. doesn’t just scoop ice cream. They also serve up community involvement through partnerships with local charities, fundraising for causes like the Dragonfly Foundation Girls on the Run, and Montgomery Food Share. These events are called FUNdraisers and they happen just about every single week throughout the entire summer. A percentage of proceeds from that day’s sales are donated to the benefiting organization. For many kids in the neighborhood, working at Walker’s is their first foray into holding a job.
Montgomery is home to many other treasured Greater Cincinnati businesses. You could stop by Montgomery Inn, where presidents have eaten and which has been the region’s goto spot for ribs and Saratoga chips since 1951. Locals and visitors alike frequent places like Scrumbles Café, famed for its cookies-and-gelato combos, or the Aglamesis Brothers ice cream parlor.
The Montgomery Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday and is held in the Montgomery Elementary School parking lot. This vibrant market showcases more than 30 local vendors, offering local produce, handmade goods, fresh flowers and more. The market is an excellent place to support small businesses and discover unique products you won’t find anywhere else.
Montgomery offers a suite of attractions and community institutions. Swaim Park, a beloved green space, offers playgrounds, pond access, trails, and athletic fields. Visitors can admire Yost Tavern, Blair House and WilderSwaim House, each designated on the National Register for their architectural and historic importance.
